Aurora Neuroinclusion Program – FAQ for potential candidates
1. About the Program
What is the Aurora Neuroinclusion Program and how does it work?
When looking to fill a position, Services Australia managers may opt to hire through the Aurora Neuroinclusion Program rather than the traditional APS recruitment approach. These positions are not created specifically for the program. Services Australia acknowledges the strengths that neurodivergent individuals can bring to a team, and the retention and performance outcomes the program has achieved demonstrate its effectiveness as an alternative recruitment approach.
Unlike traditional CV and interview based recruitment processes, the Aurora program takes an experiential approach to candidate assessment, observing candidates’ skill and behaviours in work-like settings.
For additional information on the program please see: https://employforability.com.au/aurora/.
What locations do you operate in?
Aurora Program locations are determined by workforce demand and available vacancies within Services Australia business areas. As a result, the program can only be advertised and delivered in locations where vacancies are available. These locations and dates are published at: https://employforability.com.au/aurora/.
2. Eligibility & Diagnosis
I don’t have ADHD or ASD, but I have another neurodivergent condition. Am I eligible?
While Services Australia and Employ for Ability acknowledge that there are other neurodivergent conditions, at this time, a formal diagnosis of ADHD and/or Autism is required to be eligible for the program.
Since the DSM-5, Asperger’s syndrome and PDD-NOS have been incorporated into Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and ADD is now diagnosed as ADHD. Accordingly, individuals with historical diagnoses of these conditions are also eligible.
I have ADHD, autism, or both. Does this affect my eligibility?
The program works the same way for everyone who is eligible, regardless of whether they have ADHD, ASD, or both. If applicants have a formal diagnosis of at least one of these two conditions, have Australian citizenship, and are at least 18 years of age, they have an equal opportunity to apply.
I have another disability in addition to ADHD/autism. Can I still apply?
Yes. ADHD and autism are the only conditions we need to know about for program eligibility. Disclosure of any other condition will have no impact on your application.
What is considered a "formal diagnosis"?
A formal diagnosis is a methodical evaluation by a licensed healthcare professional using clinical interviews, observation, and standardised testing. We accept documents from professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists, and paediatricians. If primary documents (like a diagnostic report) are unavailable, we may accept other records identifying that a diagnosis has been given in the past—for example, a GP confirming that you have already been diagnosed.
My diagnosis is from several years ago. Is it still valid?
Yes. If you can provide appropriate evidence that you have received a formal diagnosis, the timing of that diagnosis does not matter.
I don't have a formal diagnosis yet. Can I still apply?
We require applicants to have a formal diagnosis to be eligible.
3. The Application Process
How do I apply?
From our webpage (https://employforability.com.au/aurora/), scroll down to “Current Positions Available”. If jobs are available, you will see the location and job description. Select “Apply” and provide the requested information, specifically:
- Proof of Australian citizenship
- Evidence of a formal diagnosis of autism or ADHD
- A completed application form (answering three specific questions in lieu of a cover letter)
- Your resume
Note: If you do not see positions advertised on the website, we are not currently recruiting. Because we recruit in batches across locations, please sign up for our mailing list to be notified when positions become available – and it is the best way to be updated on which location will be next.
I was born after 1986, my parents were born overseas, and I don’t have evidence of their citizenship at the time I was born. What should I do?
If you have an Australian passport, that is usually the simplest way to prove citizenship. Another option is to provide an Australian citizenship by descent or adoption extract. If neither of these are available, you can contact us at aurora@employforability.com.au.
Can I update or withdraw my application after I've submitted it?
- Update: You can update your application prior to applications closing. Please email aurora@employforability.com.au with your updated documents.
- Withdraw: To withdraw your application, please email us at the same address.
I missed the cutoff for application, can you still accept mine?
We are unable to accept late applications, although there may be rare exceptions (such as our website being offline). We begin reviewing applications very shortly after the cutoff time to ensure a quick turnaround for applicants.
I’m having trouble submitting my application, what do I do?
If you are having technical difficulties applying, contact us at aurora@employforability.com.au. Please include the details of the issue, your completed application, and if possible, screenshots of the problem.
I'm already an APS employee, can I apply?
Yes, current Services Australia or Australian Public Service employees may apply. There is no advantage or disadvantage for those applying from within the APS. Please note that APS candidates must comply with the terms of the APS handbook for internal position applications, including not utilising APS-provided resources or devices during the application process.
I was unsuccessful in the past, can I reapply?
Yes. There are no restrictions on the number of times a person may apply for the program.
4. Assessments & Recruitment Timeline
How long does the recruitment process take?
The recruitment process happens in several phases. The typical recruitment process is as follows:
- Application Phase: Job advertisements are live for 3 weeks. Applicants are contacted with outcomes 2-4 business days after closing.
- Screening Workshop: Held 1 week after invitations are sent out. This is run as an online (Microsoft Teams) based process.
- Assessment Week: Held 1 week after the Screening Workshop. Invitations are sent 2-3 business days after the screening concludes. This is a face-to-face process and candidates will need to attend in person in order to progress.
- Outcomes: Typically 4-6 weeks following the conclusion of Assessment Week, but this may vary.
- Commencement: Pre-employment checks typically take 2-3 weeks following a verbal offer. Once completed, your start date is flexible based on your needs and the hiring team’s needs.
What happens during the Screening Workshop?
Candidates who are shortlisted following the application stage will be invited to participate in the Screening Workshop. The Screening Workshop is used to determine candidate suitability to progress to the final stage of the recruitment process – the Aurora Assessment.
The Screening Workshop will typically begin around one week after applications close and involves:
- Online individual activities completed independently at nominated times selected by you. These will typically include a short research-based quiz (60 mins) and a position-based individual assessment (90 mins). These activities are emailed directly to you at your scheduled commencement time and are not live or facilitated.
- A short 1-to-1 MS Teams conversation with an Employ for Ability team member to discuss your individual assessment and provide an opportunity to talk through your approach.
You will be provided with clear instructions, scheduled times and MS Teams invitations for each activity before the Screening Workshop begins. You will need access to a computer or laptop, a reliable internet connection, and a working microphone and speakers or headset for the MS Teams activities.
What can I do to prepare for the program?
If invited to in-person activities, you will need access to a personal laptop and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (free alternatives like LibreOffice and Google Suite are fine, though unfamiliarity may make assessments slightly harder). We also recommend planning your travel route to arrive on time, planning your lunch, and contacting Employ for Ability early if you require reasonable adjustments.
When will outcomes be announced?
Outcomes are announced roughly 4-6 weeks following the conclusion of Assessment Week, though this varies depending on the number of applicants & delegate approval times. If you are the top scorer for more than one position, you will be given the choice of which to accept. We will contact all applicants regardless of the outcome as soon as possible.
Do you provide feedback?
We can provide feedback upon request following an unsuccessful outcome. Please note that for the initial application phase, feedback is limited due to time constraints.
5. Workplace Supports & Adjustments
Can I request reasonable adjustments during recruitment?
Yes. We are open to discussing any requested adjustments. The program is specifically designed for neurodivergent participants, so some adjustments are automatically included for everyone—such as additional time for assessments, the ability to wear noise-cancelling headphones, and taking breaks as needed.
If you require specific adjustments (e.g., dimmed lights, printed documents), please let us know when you receive your invitation. Note: We will do our best, but some adjustments (like dimming lights) may be limited by venue capabilities. Please reach out in advance with any concerns.
What support is provided to Aurora employees once hired?
Aurora employees and their managers receive regular 1-1 coaching from the Services Australia Aurora coaches. This coaching helps employees navigate challenges related to self-advocacy, communication, workplace norms, and executive functioning.
Additionally, before commencing work, successful candidates undergo “Work Ready” training (4 x 3-hour sessions) with Employ for Ability, and a Career Success Plan is developed with assistance from your coach.
Do I need to disclose my diagnosis to my manager or colleagues?
Your manager, and likely some colleagues, will be aware you have a diagnosis of ADHD or Autism due to the program’s eligibility requirements. However, whether you share specific details beyond that is entirely up to you.
You are required to provide your manager with a Career Success Plan—a document outlining your communication preferences, work style, and information to help support you and is developed collaboratively by the candidate and their EFA coach.
6. Employment Details
Is this a permanent job or a temporary position?
The position description will state whether a position is permanent or non-ongoing. Typically, positions are offered as non-ongoing 12-month contracts with the possibility of extension to 18 months.
What salary and conditions apply?
The Services Australia Enterprise Agreement (2024-2027) provides full details of salaries and conditions for all APS level classifications. There are no additional conditions for Aurora employees, other than completing Work Ready training prior to commencement, developing a Career Success Plan, and attending coaching sessions.
What flexible work arrangements are available? Can I work from home (WFH) or work part-time?
The requirements vary depending on the position and hiring team. Some positions have security requirements that make WFH challenging, or time-sensitive work unsuitable for part-time arrangements. Therefore, please apply under the assumption that you will be working 5 days per week, commuting to the office, unless the position description indicates otherwise.
Do I need a security clearance?
This information is included in the job description PDF on our website. You do not need to have an active clearance to apply or before commencing the position. You can begin working in a somewhat limited capacity until your security clearance is finalised.
7. Logistics & Finances
Do you offer financial assistance for attending recruitment activities or for relocation?
No. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide financial assistance at any stage of the recruitment process, nor do we provide financial assistance for relocation if you accept a position.
Does this count as a job application for Jobseeker?
Yes. The positions advertised are jobs just like any other, it is the recruitment process and support that is different.
Can I use Employ for Ability as a referee for future job applications?
No. The Aurora Neuroinclusion Program does not give us enough information to confidently act as a referee for future job applications outside of the program.
